As the Premier League prepares for it’s return, we look at five of the greatest comebacks of the Premier League era.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-5 Manchester United 2001

Spurs looked as though they’d upset the early form book, as they cruised to a 3-0 half time lead at home to Man United. But the Red Devils made a double substitution at half time, and it made all the difference. They had one back within a minute of the restart, sparking a breathtaking second half display from United, which helped to claim a famous win.

Manchester City 2-3 Fulham 2008

In a must win game for Fulham in their fight for Premier League survival, they made the worst possible start. The Cottagers were two down in a little over 20 minutes, and at one point were set to be relegated with other results also conspiring against them. Diomansy Kamara got one back, before Danny Murphy equalised for the visitors. They were still heading for the drop until a last minute winner kept their hopes alive!

Newcastle United 4-4 Arsenal 2011

Newcastle were booed off at half time as a ruthless Arsenal eased to a 4-0 lead. In fact, the Gunners led 1-0 inside a minute, and were three goals ahead in just 10 minutes. Abou Diaby’s Red Card gave the Magpies a glimmer of hope. Two Joey Barton penalties and a goal from Leon Best laid the platform for Cheick Tiote’s screamer to earn the most unlikely of points.

Manchester City 3-2 QPR 2012

With just stoppage time remaining and two goals needed to claim the title, the dream looked over for the Sky Blues. But Edin Dzeko’s header from a corner tied things up with a little over a minute to spare, and then in the dying seconds, Sergio Aguero scored the most dramatic title-winning goal of all time to complete an equally incredible comeback.

Crystal Palace 3-3 Liverpool 2014

It turned out to be the game that cost Liverpool the title. Having cruised to a 3-0 lead midway through the second half, the Reds looked as though they had kept their hopes of winning their first Premier League title alive. What followed is one of the biggest collapses of the Premier League era, as a Dwight Gayle brace broke Liverpool hearts.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United - After trailing 2-0 at the break in the derby, Paul Pogba inspired a memorable comeback for the Red Devils to win the game, and Chris Smalling's winner meant City had to wait a little longer to secure Pep Guardiola's first Premier League title.

Wolves 4-3 Leicester 2001 - Wolves recovered from a 3-0 half time deficit to win a pulsating relegation battle, although neither side could ultimately avoid the drop.

Liverpool 3-3 Manchester United 1994 - United led 3-0 inside 25 minutes in this classic at Anfield, before Liverpool clawed their way back to earn a dramatic point.

Lets hope for some more classic games when the Premier League returns on the 17th of June.
