Super League 2021 - Round 4 Review

Round 4 saw a couple of valiant efforts in defeat for two sides who are still searching for their first wins. Huddersfield were edged out 18-10 by the Champions St Helens, with Coach Ian Watson confident his side will start to win games based on their recent showing. I’m sure Chris Chester will take plenty of positives from Wakefield’s display at Hull FC, with just a Try separating the two at the KCOM. Wigan continued their 100% record by ending Castleford’s, while Salford won their first game of Super League 2021, inflicting a 4th defeat onto Leigh. Warrington won well in the South of France, while Hull KR have gone back-to-back for the first time in over a year thanks to a Kane Linnett Hat-Trick against Leeds.

So Saints and Wigan lead the way with 4 from 4, while Hull remain unbeaten in third. Leigh, Huddersfield and Wakefield remain bottom and winless, with the Centurions propping up the table after four rounds.

Team of the week

Full Back

Zak Hardaker, Wigan Warriors - the fact he was picked at full back ahead of the returning French speaks volumes. And once again Hardaker delivered with another fine display.

Wingers

Bevan French, Wigan Warriors - Back in the Wigan side and back with a brace of tries Playing “out of position” on the Wing, but his versatility and quality in each position he plays shone through again.

Ryan Hall, Hull KR - Hall crossed against his former club Leeds to bring up 200 Super League scores. Already proving a real hit for KR and continuing where he left off.

Centres

Jake Mamo, Warrington Wolves - With Greg Inglis lurking on the sidelines now for the Wire, the Centrea are under pressure and boy did Mamo perform. 151 metres vs Catalans a hefty chunk coming with his brilliant intercept try.

Tony King, Warrington Wolves - Wire double in the Centres, with King getting the nod mostly for his work in defence, keeping the dangerous Dean Whare very quiet.

Halves

Jackson Hastings, Wigan Warriors - showed why he’s off to the NRL again next season. Composed and knitted everything together for Wigan. Didn’t need all the glitz and glamour, was just very, very good at doing what he needed to do.

Kevin Brown, Salford Red Devils - pulled the strings for Salford as he scored twice to help them to a first league win of the season.

Props

Scott Taylor, Hull FC - lead by example with and without the ball, coming up with a massive hit on Joe Westerman.

Sebastine Ikahihifo, Salford Red Devils - String of big carries from the big man helped Salford control Leigh in the middle of the park. Much better from Seb.

Hooker

Daryll Clark, Warrington Wolves - dominated the ruck, and his quick darts out of dummy half helped Warrington to cease control. This was typified by his assist for Ben Currie.

Second Rowers

Kane Linnett, Hull KR - Hat-Trick against Leeds on Friday, chalking up just shy of 150 metres in the process. Proving to be a real strike weapon for the Robins.

Luke Yates, Huddersfield Giants - playing slightly wider than we are accustomed to seeing him, but once again a fine effort which saw him out metre his St Helens counterparts despite defeat.

Loose Forward

Joe Westerman, Wakefield Trinity - was excellent for Trinity who came so close to a maiden win. Showed his ball playing qualities as a 13, but also did the tough stuff as well.

Coach

Steve Price, Warrington Wolves - after an uninspiring start, the Wolves have clicked into gear the last 2 games and they did a job on Catalans on Saturday. Credit to the Coach for getting the game plan spot on.

Try of the Week

We saw a couple of interception efforts but for me this one shades it given the crucial nature of it in the game. This score from Jake Mamo swayed the game very much in the Wires’ favour against Catalans.
