Super League 2021 - Round 3 Review

The Super League - no not that one - is now three rounds old, and the third installment served up a couple of historic moments. Ben Crooks entered the record books as he scored the fastest ever Try in either Super League or the NRL, crossing after just 7.5 seconds for Hull KR against Huddersfield on Friday night. It was the first score in an enthralling game which saw KR win 25-24. It was a game which had it all, including a few dubious decisions!

Sunday also saw a first ever Super League Golden Point Draw - yes, they exist, not that I knew that before it happened! Hull FC and Warrington were tied at 14-14 after 80 minutes, two halves of Golden Point and 9 missed field goal attempts. Wigan kicked off the weekend with a 19-6 win over Leeds, but the big news from the Warriors is that Jackson Hastings will be heading back to Australia. He’s signed a deal with West Tigers for next term, ending the seemingly continuous speculation about his future. Elsewhere, Catalans, Castleford and St Helens all maintained their 100% winning starts. While their opponents all continued the opposite trend. Catalans beat Salford 42-6, Cas won against Leigh 52-16 and despite a 0-0 half time scoreline, Saints beat Wakefield 34-6.

Team of the Week

Full Back

Lee Gaskell, Huddersfield - Came on at Half time and dragged the Giants back into the game. Was a massive threat joining in the attack down the left hand side.

Wingers

Derrell Olpherts, Castleford Tigers - Two Tries for the Winger who displayed his electric pace for one of the scores.

Fouad Yaha, Catalans Dragons - Got to keep to my rule of Hat Trick equals TOTW selection. Big unit who can finish as well.

Centres

Kevin Naiqama, St Helens - was a thorn in the Wakefield side all game, crossing for two well taken scores.

Jake Wardle, Huddersfield Giants - may have been on the losing side, but in the second half he was electric for Huddersfield, and showing why he’s an outsider for an England selection

Halves

Mikey Lewis, Hull KR - Either KR half back could have been picked here but I’ve edged towards Mikey Lewis who was a real live wire who looked so dangerous whenever he ran at the Huddersfield defence.

Jake Trueman, Castleford - Another mature performance from the youngster, who is fast becoming one of the most dependable halves in the Super League.

Props

George Lawler, Hull KR - Stood up and was counted after Sims left the field early. Over 50 carries and around 130 metres made too. Top effort.

Matt Prior, Leeds - despite defeat, Matt Prior was once again a stand out for Leeds against a strong Wigan pack.

Hooker

Matt Parcell, Hull KR - did a bit of everything for KR on Friday night and was a key part in them seeing this one out. Man of the Match on the night.

Second Row

Mike McMeeken, Catalans - Rediscovered his form in the South of France, and was a menace to Salford down the Catalan right.

Jordan Lane, Hull FC - one of my stand out players so far in 2021. Heavily involved in both Hull FC tries at the weekend and such a ferocious tackler and ball carrier.

Loose Forward

George King, Hull KR - Described as an underrated player in the Sky commentary, King outshone Josh Jones and Luke Yates in their personal battles. On this form, he’s certainly well capable of mixing it with the best.

Coach

Tony Smith, Hull KR - after so many near misses of late, his side kept their nerve to win this one. Smith has kept faith in his players and still has them playing some excellent Rugby League. Great week for them.

Try of the week

Jake Trueman, Castleford Vs Leigh

There were plenty choose from but this effort is Classy Cas at their very best. Quick hands from deep, electric pace, and a half back in support. Sensational.
