The big talking point of Round 2 was the £100,000 raised for the Mose Masoe foundation, as the sport did it’s bit to help the big man and his family on his road to recovery. What a fantastic effort by all involved 👏👏👏
On the pitch, Warrington Wolves responded to opening day disappointment in style as they dissipated the Leigh centurions in clinical fashion, as the Centurions suffered a bump on their return to the top flight with a 44-12 defeat. Five sides made it back to back wins. Josh Reynolds and Jake Connor starred as Hull FC cruised to victory over Salford 35-4, who have been left rooted to the bottom of the table on points difference. Saints kept a valiant Hull KR scoreless in a 25-0 win which saw Regan Grace grab a brace. Cas edged out rivals Leeds Rhinos 18-10 in the tightest of the Easter weekend games. Wigan turned on the class in the second half with Jake Bibby crossing for a first career hat-trick to see off Wakefield who stayed winless. Huddersfield also remained without a win under their new coach Ian Watson as Catalans ran out 20-10 winners in the weekend's final fixture.
Team of the Week
Full Back:
Jake Connor, Hull FC - Connor retains the Full Back jersey after laying on two tries in brilliant fashion. The first assist is a thing of beauty. For me, the most dangerous man in Super League at present.
Wingers:
Jake Bibby, Wigan Warriors - Bagged his first career hat trick, which included two excellent finishes. 5 scores in 2 games is superb form from a man who wouldn’t probably be Wigan’s first choice winger.
Tom Davies, Catalan Dragons - Set up a try with a brilliant mazey run, and that couple with some excellent defensive plays and yardage gained gets him the nod over two-try Regan Grace.
Centres:
Willie Isa, Wigan Warriors - He may not have played centre regularly for a while but he rolled back the years and dished out the class with a couple of classy try assists
Toby King, Warrington Wolves - Cut Leigh to ribbons on that left edge and looked every bit an England Centre, continuing his fine form from last term.
Halves:
Josh Reynolds, Hull FC - Lived up to marquee billing this weekend. Two tries and a huge influence on everything Hull FC did. Developing a great partnership with Sneyd and Connor, as shown below...
Gareth Widdop, Warrington Wolves - Much more like what we'd expect to see from a man who excelled in the NRL. Ran the game creating tries and making breaks at will down the Wire left edge.
Props:
Chris Hill, Warrington Wolves - made a tonne of metres and broke several tackles against his former club who couldn't handle him. With a point to prove this season, Hill was much closer to his best this week.
Sam Kasiano, Catalan Dragons - Couple of massive hit ups, sending Adam O’Brien flying with a huge run! Also displayed his silky skills with ball in hand making a massive impact from the bench.
Hooker:
Daryl Clark, Warrington Wolves - Looked sharp right from the start. Always a catalyst for Warrington, and his vision and speed out of dummy half helped Widdop to lay the platform for a comfortable win.
Second Rowers:
Ben Currie, Warrington Wolves - Showed some flashes of true class with some great offloads. He was a threat every time he had the ball. Would love to see him carry on that form and make an England claim.
Oliver Holmes, Castleford Tigers - Scored a Try, again, having scored last week too. All round solid performance and a key man for Cas in their first two outings.
Loose Forward:
Jordan Lane, Hull FC- Becoming a terrific and dependable player for FC. Display vs Salford typified this. An 8 out of 10 this week, and I'm sure it won't be his last.
Coach:
Steve Price, Warrington Wolves - Questions were asked of Price after their subdued showing against Castleford. But this was much more like it from the Wire and you have to give a big amount of credit to the Coach for that. They have to replicate that attacking intent week in week out now.
Try of the Week
Well it was going to be a Warrington one considering the amount they scored! And for me this score from Widdop showed the Wire’s left edge at it’s unrelenting best.
Predictions results
Round 2 of our predictions saw Chris predict all 6 winners to claim the first clean sweep of the season. Rob and Kieran were both right to back Wigan and Saints. Rob also correctly predicting Castleford to beat Leeds with Kieran rightly backing Catalans to leave them collecting another 3 points.
So that means Chris now leads the way by a point, with Kieran a point behind, and Rob just a further one back.
