We are ever closing to the teams releasing their cars for this upcoming season. But, in the last week, we have had the world champion finally signing a contract, Portugal rumored to host the third race in the calendar, and an ex-world champion is involved in a serious crash. Let's get into it...
Lewis Hamilton signs new contract
The Brit has FINALLY signed for the 2021 season. After speculation that Hamilton will not be driving this season, Mercedes announced on Monday that he has signed on the dotted line with the Germain team.
Details of the contract are still confidential but what we do know is that it is for a year and involves a commitment from Mercedes to continue to work with the seven-time champion on seeking "greater diversity and inclusion in motorsport". They will work on making a new joint charity. Hamilton says the manufacturer has been "extremely supportive" on the issue.
Portugal to host the third race this season
Portimao has been given the go-ahead to fill the vacant third round of this season's calendar. The Portuguese Grand Prix made its debut last year and will take Sunday 2nd May 2021.
The F1 Commission met on Thursday to officially communicate the news to teams. The meeting discussed proposals for three Saturday "sprint" races.
The season opener is expected to start in Bahrain on March 28, with the second round in Italy on April 18.
Alonso fractures his upper jaw in crash
Two-time world champion sustained a fracture whilst out on a cycle training ride near his home in Lugano, Switzerland. It happened on Thursday, Alpine has reported. The 39-year-old has undergone surgery and will remain in the hospital for checks over the next 24 hours. A report by police said the accident happened as a car turned left, across oncoming traffic, into a car park. The driver of the car was a 42-year-old Swiss who lives in the area.
Alpine added, "The medical team is satisfied with his progress. After a few days of complete rest, he will be able to progressively resume training. We expect him to be fully operational to [prepare] for the season."
Pre-season is due to start in Bahrain in just under a month, before the first race is held in the same place on Sunday 28th March.
We, at Matchday FM, wish him a speedy recovery.
